What is counselling?

While counselling can mean different things to different people, it is generally sought by those wanting to find ways to cope with emotional challenges.  It is typically a form of talking therapy that provides a safe, non-judgemental space for individuals to explore their problems, concerns, and any difficult emotions they may be facing to better understand their thoughts and feelings.

Since everyone is unique, therapy and the support provided is tailored to meet your individual needs and circumstances.

The person-centred approach to therapy, founded by the American psychologist Carl Rogers in the 1940s, is built on the belief that, with the right conditions, individuals can reach their full potential and become their true selves.

“The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I change.”

Carl Rogers, On Becoming a Person: A Therapist’s View of Psychotherapy

How can counselling help?

Counselling, or therapy, offers a safe, confidential space for individuals to explore their emotions, thoughts, and behaviours. This process can help you gain a deeper understanding of yourself and your relationships with others. During counselling sessions, your therapist will not offer advice or opinions, but will help you find solutions and develop strategies for managing challenges in your life. With a focus on non-judgmental listening and impartial support, counselling empowers you to make meaningful changes and improve your emotional well-being.

What can I expect from a counselling session?

Each person’s needs are unique. Typically, counselling involves regular sessions where you’ll have the opportunity to discuss a variety of topics, including emotions, behaviors, relationships, and aspects of your past, such as childhood experiences. The frequency and length of these sessions will be agreed upon with your trained counsellor to ensure your goals are met effectively.
